AGRO'S CARTOON CONNECTION - Hilarious weekday
breakfast TV for kids. Ran for a few hours before school started and was filmed in good ol' Brisbane, before it was shifted to Sydney and saw its demise. Hosted by Agro and a variety of young blondes and interspersed with various cartoons of the times, Agro's main objective was to embarrass his co-hosts. The show also showcased Gibbo, a large man, whose roll in the show I'm still not sure of, and a bizarre middle aged man dressed as a clown called Crikey. He used to harrass people in the Queen Street Mall (my mother hid in a shop when she saw him one day). Ranger Stacey would often pop in with a animal that would (hopefully) poo on the set. Genuinely funny show which deservedly won 7 Logies in a row for Best Kids Show.
English Alternative: Sooty
THE EARLY BIRD SHOW - I'm sure someone watched this show. I didn't, it was a bit before my time and I was probably watching Agro anyhow. A clip of Marty the Monster getting attacked by a guest kangaroo makes it onto every Australian Bloopers special. If anyone has a photo of Marty the Monster, please email us!
FAT CAT AND FRIENDS - Very similar to Humphrey as it too contained a large mute animal and very little educational content. It was cancelled in the early nineties but somehow Fat Cat kept reappearing on Full Frontal as the butt of many gags. Apparently he still appears on Telethons in Perth, but doesn't everyone?

HERE'S HUMPHREY - Very similar to Fat Cat in that he was just a man in a suit who couldn't talk. He also didn't wear pants. He communicated by clapping a lot. Brush with fame: At the age of five Jen went to see Humphrey Live on stage and when going to hug the boy in the row behind her Humphrey brushed past her knee.
PLAYSCHOOL - Possibly the most interesting show on television for any age group. Two or three hosts sing songs, act the fool and make cars out of toilet rolls. Wednesday is animal day - the best Wednesday ever was when the mouse ran up John Hamblin's shirt. Time checks on the Rocket Clock and Flower Clock were mandatory, as was looking through a shaped window (the round window, being a popular choice). The showcase of toys was added to over the years with popular favourites such as Jemima, Big Ted and Little Ted slowly losing their fur. Humpty hasn't been washed since the mid-seventies for fear of his dots falling off in the dryer. The show was revamped with a crappy ballad version of the theme song and hasn't been the same ever since.
THE WHITLAMS - ARIA award winning band from Sydney
fronted by pianoman Tim Freedman. The band has been around for ages, with the original line-up of Tim on piano, Stevie on guitar and Andy on double bass started in 1992 and fell apart in 1996 after the death of Stevie. Tim reformed the band and went on to release their most famous album Eternal Nightcap which won them many awards. Andy died in 2000 but had already left the band by this stage. Tim kept the band going and to date they have released 6 albums. Their fanclub, the FOWs (Friends of Whitlams), are a bunch of bitchy, sniping whingers, which is a shame, because the band's music is actually very good.
BLUEY - An ABC police drama broadcast in 1976. It was very unmemorable (certainly for me, as I wasn't born yet) but it gained popularity after it was re-voiced and broadcast on the Late Show in the mid-ninties.
THE SULLIVANS - Australian TV show that ran from 76-
83 about a family that lived in post-WWII Melbourne. Lots of knitted argyle vests featured in the series, as did both the Minogue sisters and the father from The Castle.
RUSH - A mid-70's Drama series on the ABC set in the Victorian Goldfields in the 1850s. The series was later re-voiced as "The Olden Days" and broadcast on The Late Show.
THE FLYING DOCTORS - Television series that ran from the mid 80's to the mid 90's about the flying doctors, who are actually real. The series starred Rebecca Gibney who went onto star in a bunch of other stuff and now sells pain killers.
CHANCES - Sex! Nudity! The father from The Castle! The TV show Chances had it all but ran for only 2 years in the early ninties. Kate Langbroek was on it once apparently, as were her breasts.
HOMICIDE - A 12 year long TV series about cops in Victoria. Starred a bunch of good actors, including the QC from the Castle. Shirl, the VKC radio operator is never seen, kind of like Maris in Frasier.
RECOVERY - Mid to late 90s music show on the ABC which ran on Saturday mornings. Starred Dylan Lewis and a crazy woman with purple hair and a silent bodyguard called The Enforcer.
