AUSTRALIAN THINGS

THE ABC - Similar to the BBC in that it is government funded and shows most of the programmes that the BBC does. Commonly referred to as BBC 5, the Australian Broadcasting Corporation has a long history of quality journalism, educational children's programming and award winning period dramas - all previously screened in the UK 6 months ago. In all seriousness they are by far better than all the commercial networks in Australia, often miles ahead in comedy programming and world current affairs. In the mid-ninties we were told it cost us a mere 8c a day to keep running which was well worth it and still is. As long as they keep showing The Good Life repeats.

BIG THINGS - Australia has an obsession with making Big Things. For example in Nambour, Queensland there is a Big Pineapple, in Coffs Harbour, NSW, there is a Big Banana. There is a large replica of almost every domesticated animal and fruit throughout Australia. They are commonly referred to as "tourist attractions" but many children on driving holidays often ignore their parents requests to "Look at the Big Prawn! You might never see it again!" This is because in the next ten years, most of the "big things" will be closed due to lack or tourists, or a termite infestation. Or they get blown over in a storm.

FLYING DOCTORS - Australia is very BIG which means that if you live in the middle of nowhere and get sick it might take you two days to get help. In the city you can sit in traffic for 2 days waiting to get to a hospital, but in the country a plane will come and get you and fly you to help. A bit of a novelty and I'm sure people were just getting sick just to score a free plane trip to Sydney. Either way, they're a bit of a national institution and there was even a TV show made about them.
